Dietary Fiber is found only in foods of plant origin. There are two types of dietary fiber, soluble and insoluble. Studies have shown that soluble fiber added to a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol lowers blood cholesterol. Good sources of soluble fiber include oat bran, oatmeal, beans, barley, and pectin found in some fruits and vegetables. Insoluble fiber, found in wheat bran, whole wheat breads and cereals, and vegetables and their skins and peels, provides protection against colon cancer and helps with bowel functions. Most fiber containing foods have a combination of both soluble and insoluble fiber. |
